Automation in catering: France relies on Rieber GNauto

With the new EGAlim law, France is making a radical change in catering: since January 1, 2025, the use of plastic containers for cooking, transporting, heating and serving food in schools, universities, pediatric facilities and maternity wards has been prohibited. As part of this, Rieber, together with its French partner Enodis, is supplying around 500,000 GNauto containers made of food-safe stainless steel to French catering establishments. In addition to sustainability and durability, the GNauto reusable system offers one thing above all: a new dimension of automation in large kitchens.

Increased efficiency through automation

With the introduction of GNauto containers, France is not only optimizing its reusable strategy, but also process automation in catering. The ergonomic design of the containers and their compatibility with machines such as those from MECAPACK enable smooth destacking by robot. This reduces the number of personnel required, minimizes work steps and significantly shortens walking distances. A major advantage, especially in times of rising personnel costs and a shortage of skilled workers.

Thanks to their conical shape, the GNauto containers also save up to 60% storage space compared to conventional GN containers. Process automation is further optimized by the new "plug-in lid auto": Four support studs in the corners ensure clean and safe vertical stacking, while the newly developed stacking trolley simplifies handling. This trolley can hold four times the amount of GNauto containers, can be loaded both manually and automatically, and can withstand even the highest weight loads. Brackets reliably secure the containers and lids against falling over.

Digitization for maximum transparency

Another central element of automation is the digital networking of the GNauto containers. Each container is provided with a robust, lasered GS1 Digital Link QR code, which enables complete traceability for all those involved in the process. This technology accelerates returns, minimizes losses and increases the efficiency of the entire workflow. Rieber thus goes beyond simply providing reusable containers and offers a comprehensive, digitalized solution for modern catering.

100 years of Rieber - shaping the future

The year 2025 marks not only the implementation of plastic-free catering in France, but also the 100th anniversary of Rieber. With the delivery of 500,000 GNauto containers and the introduction of digitalized processes, the company is continuing its tradition of setting new standards - efficient, sustainable and "Made in Germany".
